So, don't things get better after that? In one word: nope. Why bother when I can just watch the excellent Disney version instead?īut, yes, after about 25% the story changes when Jafar traps Aladdin underground (no magic lamp this time) and proceeds to take over and terrorize Agrabah with the genie. It was actually painfully boring to read the parts that were an exact novelization of the film. “All this for a loaf of bread?” Aladdin asked, exasperated. And, the small prologue aside, we once again meet Aladdin in the market when he is stealing bread and being chased by the Sultan's guards - just like in the movie. 25% - down to copying the exact dialogue in parts - but then changes a single element of the plot to spin the story in a new direction.īeing a fan of the Disney movie, I found myself saying some of the lines before the characters. Instead, it's more of a fan fiction that recreates the Disney film for the first approx. A Whole New World, contrary to what I initially believed, is not really a retelling.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 August 2019 There is one particular page when sending a report to Earth which is just awful! The two stars is purely because I managed to finish the book, albeit with strained eyes. I have put a copy of '2001' next to it for comparison. I'm not sure if it is "Voyager Books" or "Harper Collins" - it isn't clear - but as you can see from the pictures, the font is awful and fairly inconsistent. Now, the 2/5 rating for book is regarding the publisher of this version(purchased from marketplace). There is also a movie adaptation of this book called '2010: The Day We Made Contact', which I will watch after writing this review! So readers may feel confused if reading after the first book, but not viewing the movie (which I recommend viewing, if not to compliment the book then for the effects of the time). Readers and viewers will know of the few differences, with the main one being Kubrick opting to travel to Jupiter whereas A.C.C writes about Saturn. It doesn't take place after the '2001' book, but instead is a sequel to Kubrick's '2001' movie. Summary: good sequel to movie, bad publisher/typescript.įirst of all, I should make clear that the plot of this book is a good sequel. But with an enormous revelation, and a heartrending intervention, Maisie may finally discover the strength she needs to find the same peace that the island has brought her within herself. When Maisie's greatest attempt to maintain the special magic of her friendship with Una goes up in smoke, it seems as though all is lost. Soon Maisie finds herself playing second fiddle - jealous of Una and David's closeness, and unsure of what those feelings mean. But now everything on Kingfisher has changed: Una has returned from her mainland school a sophisticated young woman too mature for childish games, and even worse, she has an all-consuming infatuation with David Meyer, both an old friend and an older man. This is an essential read for those looking for stories of historic LGBT+ girlhood peppered with elements of the classic bildungsroman. This summer Maisie needs that escape more than ever. Be My Love is intricately plotted, with a strong sense of place deeply rooted in Canada’s natural beauty and a level of world-building that is unparalleled in Canadian junior fiction. She and her beloved cousin Una run wild, and Maisie feels the warm embrace of her big, extended family. For as long as she can remember, Maisie has spent her summers on Kingfisher Island. Gardiner's long relationship with the LSO has led to complete symphony cycles and numerous recordings on LSO Live, most recently of Mendelssohn and Schumann in June 2022, he will conduct the LSO with soloist Maria João Pires at the Barbican and at LSO St Luke’s. His many recording accolades include two GRAMMY awards and he has received more Gramophone Awards than any other living artist. The extent of Gardiner's repertoire is illustrated in the extensive catalogue of award-winning recordings with his own ensembles and leading orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic on major labels (including Decca, Philips, Erato and 30 recordings for Deutsche Grammophon), as wide-ranging as Mozart, Schumann, Berlioz, Elgar and Kurt Weill, in addition to works by Renaissance and Baroque composers. For many of us, Italo Calvino’s 1972 novel reserves a dear place in our libraries, architectural or otherwise, for its vivid recollections of cities and their curiosities, courtesy of a certain Marco Polo as he narrates to Kublai Khan. The current touring lineup – original members Black Francis and Joey Santiago, along with David Lovering and Paz Lenchantin – is featuring music from their most recent album “Doggerel,” which has added tastes of folk and country to the mix. On top of that have been the enigmatic lyrics by singer-guitarist Black Francis (and more accessible ones by former singer-bassist Kim Deal). Yet since their formation in 1986, they haven’t strayed far from a blend of strong harmonies, raucous guitar solos, and a poppy rock that often jumps back and forth between loud and quiet, while piling on references to punk and surf rock.
